Dawgs’ Defense Comes Up Big Once Again In Statement Win Over Tennessee

Georgia’s defense is once again among the best in the nation, ranking second in points allowed and fifth in total yards. The Bulldogs smothered Tennessee’s lethal attack in last week’s showdown with the Volunteers, keeping the Vols out of the end zone until late in the fourth quarter and limiting Heisman Trophy candidate Hendon Hooker to 195 passing yards.

The Bulldogs have gone UNDER the total nine times during their 11-game winning streak, but Georgia’s offense is also firing on all cylinders. Stetson Bennett threw for two touchdowns and ran for another against Tennessee when the Bulldogs had two pass plays of 49 yards or longer. The Dawgs have scored at least 42 points in three of their last four games.

If Georgia’s defense has a weakness right now, it could be at outside linebacker. The Bulldogs might be down to their third-stringer at that position after losing starter Nolan Smith for the year, then seeing backup Robert Beal leave last week’s game with a neck injury.

Mississippi State’s Pass-Happy Offense Runs Hot And Cold In Tight Win Vs Auburn

After building an early 24-3 lead Saturday against the struggling Auburn Tigers, Mississippi State needed an overtime touchdown run by Jo’quavious Marks to avoid its third straight loss. The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the second half until less than four minutes remained in regulation, then rallied for a touchdown and a field goal late in the fourth to force OT.

Quarterback Will Rogers continued to put up big numbers in head coach Mike Leach’s Air Raid system, completing 42 of 59 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Rogers now has 73 passing touchdowns in 31 games, overtaking Dak Prescott for the school’s all-time record for passing yards and TDs.

The 39-33 victory over Auburn marked the fifth straight game in which Mississippi State has gone OVER the total at home, with an average of 65.2 points scored in those contests. However, the Bulldogs have historically played lower-scoring games as a home underdog, going UNDER the total in 10 of their last 11 in that situation.

Georgia: Keys to Win

This could be a bit of a flat spot for a Georgia team coming off last week’s statement win over Tennessee and a victory over rival Florida the previous week. But even if that’s the case, Georgia’s defense should keep the Dawgs in the game until Bennett and the offense start clicking.

Mississippi State: Keys to Win

It’s no secret that Mississippi State’s offense wants to throw the ball, so the Bulldogs will need to make sure they protect Rogers from a Georgia pass rush that recorded six sacks last week. Defensively, Mississippi State’s 39th-ranked secondary matches up decently against Georgia’s 10th-ranked aerial attack.
