  • Oklahoma continues its proud tradition of rostering sensational collegiate quarterbacks as Jalen Hurts and the Sooners prepare to host Texas Tech.     The Sooners opened as 24-point favorites, but bettors immediately saw that line move a half-point in Oklahoma’s favor at many books.

    After rolling to one-sided wins over inferior competition in their first two games, the Red Raiders ran into a major roadblock in a 14-point loss to Arizona going into their early-season bye. Star quarterback Alan Bowman threw one touchdown and two interceptions, then suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him out of the linup until mid-November.

    Jett Duffey and Jackson Tyner are next in line, and whoever gets the start this weekend will need to do a lot better than the 14-point showing the Red Raiders managed against Arizona. Fortunately for Texas Tech, the Sooners have been only slightly better than average on defense, allowing 355.1 total yards per game (56th) despite holding teams to 19.7 points per game.

    Oklahoma News & Notes

    First Baker Mayfield, then Kyler Murray. It remains to be seen whether Hurts will reach the lofty heights of the two guys who preceded him, but he’s off to a sensational start. The Sooners have put up an unbelievable 676.7 yards per game so far in 2019, while ranking second in points per game (55.7), second in rush yards (324.3) and sixth in passing yards (352.3).

    And while the Sooners have beat up on weaker opponents so far, they’ve shown a propensity for stepping up against better foes, having gone 15-6-1 ATS in their last 22 vs teams with winning records. They’ve also had a great deal of success against Texas Tech at home, covering six of the previous seven meetings at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

    Had this been Bowman’s offense to run, we might be more inclined to give the Red Raiders a shot to cover – but it isn’t. And they won’t.
