  • This Thanksgiving holiday will treat football fans to a nice break where they can put their feet up to watch a divisional battle between the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys. The Redskins’ chances to win the division are standing on shaky legs with quarterback Alex Smith out for the season and they’ll lean on career backup Colt McCoy to put their best foot forward. The Cowboys are coming off two wins vs potential NFC playoff teams and are 3-1 SU in four home games this season but lost to Washington back in Week 7.

    The Cowboys opened as 7.5-point favorites with a total of 40.5.

    Redskins May Have Lost their Foothold on the Division

    That snap you heard at FedExField in Week 11 was Washington’s chances to win the NFC East. Alex Smith suffered a broken leg while being sacked by the Texans, which all but effectively ended his season and potentially his career. While I would never wish that kind of harm on any player in the NFL, this game vs the Cowboys has a whole different feel to it with Colt McCoy under center.

    McCoy hasn’t started an NFL game since 2014 and in four starts that season with the Redskins, he went 1-3 SU with coincidentally his only win coming against the Cowboys on Monday Night Football. McCoy’s career record is 7-18 SU in 25 starts with 27 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions. After coming in for Smith, he completed six of 12 passes for one touchdown and had five rushes for 35 yards.

    With the offense not having much of a leg to stand on, the Skins will need to lean on their defense that is only allowing 19.8 points per game (ranked fifth) and has been stout against the run by only giving up an average of 95.7 yards per game on the ground. Bettors may not give Washington much of a chance with McCoy at quarterback but the Redskins have fared well in this matchup at 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games at AT&T Stadium and are 3-0 ATS in their last three Thanksgiving games. 

    Cowboys Burning Spread Bettors when Large Home Fave

    Coming off two wins vs the Eagles and Falcons, you would think the Cowboys just won the Super Bowl. America’s Team and its loudmouths ... I mean ... fans will let anyone know who is listening that Dallas is on its way to the Super Bowl. The annoying part is that while the Cowboys are nowhere near being the best team in the NFC (that title belongs to the Saints), they may not be completely out to lunch.

    The ’Boys defense has been their calling card all season as they rank third in points allowed per game (19.0) and fifth in rush yards allowed per game (95.0) and have given up only 13 receiving touchdowns. In their last two wins, the Cowboys held both the Falcons and Eagles to 4.4 yards per rush and got huge games from running back Ezekiel Elliott, who racked up 273 yards rushing and three total touchdowns.

    So, taking Dallas to cover the spread should be no problem, right? Not so fast. The Cowboys may be 9-1 SU in their last 10 games as faves of 7 points or more but they’re 1-9 ATS in those games and are an eye-popping 0-7 ATS in their last seven games played on Thanksgiving. To be fair, there are some conflicting trends when it comes to Thanksgiving games, as favorites are 27-11 ATS in the last 13 years and 50-29 ATS in 79 games dating back to 1984.

    Totals Bettors May Want To Wager on the OVER

    The total opened at 40.5 and while both of these teams’ offenses have struggled this season, the OVER may be a profitable angle in this divisional matchup. The OVER has hit in three of the Cowboys’ four home games this season with an average combined score of 43 points per game. The OVER has also hit in five of the last six games in this matchup with an average combined score of 50.8 points per game.

    My Pick Is…

    To take the OVER. I’m not sure if the Redskins will score more than 14 points but the Dallas offense seems to have taken off since acquiring WR Amari Cooper, which has opened up the field for RB Ezekiel Elliott. I considered taking Washington’s spread but then I realized I would be backing Colt McCoy to keep this close and that is not a wager I’m willing to make.
