Club América, Tigres set to collide at Estadio Azteca

Two giants collide as Tigres UANL and Club América face off Saturday at the Estadio Azteca in the biggest game of Week 12 in the 2019 Liga MX Clausura.

Las Águilas will return from the international break fourth in the Liga MX standings after defeating rivals Chivas Guadalajara 2-0 in their last league match. Miguel Herrera’s men are starting to pick up the pace again and have lost just once across their last five Liga MX matches.

Meanwhile, Tigres are second in the league table with 26 points and remain without question one of the favorites to win the league title. Los Felinos have lost just once this 2019 Clausura season and have won six of their last seven across all competitions.

SHARK BITES
  • Tigres UANL has gone seven straight games without a defeat across all competitions.
  • Club América has won four of its last six home games in Liga MX.
  • Four of Club América’s last six Liga MX matches have finished in the OVER.

Club América vs Tigres UANL Game Center

Tigres have recently been excellent

Make no mistake about it, though not considered a rivalry match by any means, more often than not the games between Club América and Tigres UANL assume colossal proportions. It’s not every day that you get to see two contenders go at it.

However, in recent campaigns Tigres have found a way to make life difficult for Las Águilas. Even up until last season, you could say Tigres was something of a bogey team for Las Águilas. In fact, last year’s 3-2 win by América over Tigres stopped a 10-game undefeated streak for Los Felinos over Las Águilas.

Perhaps most impressive of all is that Tigres haven’t lost a Liga MX game at the Estadio Azteca since 2015. Los Felinos have been great at the Azteca, going a total of five straight games without a defeat there, including three wins.

Expect quiet offenses

Club América and Tigres are used to having an excellent array of attacking weapons, but that hasn’t stopped both teams from hitting the UNDER regularly through the course of their last few matches.

In the case of Tigres, three of their last four matches have finished in the UNDER. Los Felinos have never been considered a high goal-scoring threat under Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti, but that has been especially true in recent games. Tigres have been without star striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has missed the last few games through injury.

Club América, on the other hand, has been typically steady, without really overwhelming opponents. Even with the addition of Nico Castillo to the attack, Las Águilas haven’t really experienced an increase in goals, as each of their last three matches in all competitions have finished in the UNDER. Overall, Club América is only the fifth-best offense in the league with 18 goals scored, five behind the No. 1-ranked offense of Club León.

But the OVER remains a possibility

However, is the OVER in the cards for this matchup? Four of the last six meetings between Club América and Tigres UANL have gone OVER the total, with an average of 3.1 goals scored per match. This includes three of their last four clashes at the Estadio Azteca.

Yes, I spoke earlier in length about how Club América has been far from a goal-scoring machine this season, but their games at the Estadio Azteca have been relatively high-scoring. Four of their last six Liga MX matches at the Azteca have finished in the OVER.

My take on the match...

This one is tough to predict, given that both of these teams are playing some really good football at the moment. If i had to take a guess, I’d go with a Club América win simply because Las Águilas are trending up after their back-to-back victories over Chivas in Copa MX and Liga MX.

At the same time, I’ll take the UNDER. I can’t imagine this being a back-and-forth affair, and I’ll have to side with those predicting a low-scoring match.
