UFC 278 is set to take place on Saturday, August 20, at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, with all the action available on PPV. Victorious in his first date with Edwards back in 2015, Usman has emerged as a strong betting favorite to successfully defend his title for the sixth time.

Usman vs Edwards II Odds Analysis

Kamaru Usman has established himself as the most dominant UFC welterweight champion since Georges St-Pierre during his three-year reign atop the 170-pound division, and that is reflected in his strengthening support at the sportsbooks.

A +155 underdog in his five-round unanimous-decision win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 that first earned him the UFC welterweight strap, “The Nigerian Nightmare” has been tagged with average odds of -285 over his five successful title defenses.

Edwards, undefeated in 10 fights since losing in his first date with Usman, has also gained momentum at the sportsbooks. His -475 odds in his last outing vs Nick Diaz marked the shortest odds he has ever sported, and extended his run of Octagon appearances as betting chalk to seven. Overall, “Rocky” has gone 2-1 in three UFC contests as a betting underdog, with his lone loss coming against Usman as a +220 bet.

Usman vs Edwards II Betting Preview

Undefeated in 19 overall appearances since falling to defeat in just his second appearance as a pro back in 2013, Usman has not shied away from top-flight opponents since being anointed UFC welterweight champ. The 35-year-old has been idle since settling the score with bitter rival Colby Covington, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in their rematch last November at UFC 268.

The Nigerian Nightmare silenced the top-ranked welterweight contender early on, dropping him to the mat in the late stages of the second round and stirring memories of his fifth-round TKO win in their first meeting at UFC 245.

But as has increasingly been the case since he joined the UFC seven years ago, Usman once again demonstrated his impressive ability to wear down opponents. The result was his 10th career win by decision, which ranks him third all-time among UFC welterweights.

Edwards Ending 14-Month Hiatus

Ranked second among UFC welterweight contenders, Leon Edwards has been idle since claiming a five-round unanimous decision over Nick Diaz at UFC 263 back in June 2021. Like Usman, going the distance is nothing new for Rocky, who has seen nine of his past 12 contests decided by the judges. That run includes five-round matchups with Diaz, Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone, all of which he won by unanimous decision.

The similarities do not end there. Like Usman, Edwards is quite comfortable taking the action to the mat. Indeed, it was his four takedowns and almost five minutes of control time that gave Rocky the edge over Diaz, who out-struck Edwards by a wide 130-83 margin. Overall, Edwards has executed nine total takedowns over his past four Octagon appearances.

However, he faces a huge challenge against Usman, who has never been successfully taken down in 15 UFC appearances. Indeed, it was Usman who had the upper hand in grappling when these fighters first met, taking down Edwards six times on the way to a decisive win.

Usman vs Edwards II Betting Pick

Fight fans should be prepared to settle in for a long clash when these fighters enter the Octagon for their UFC 278 rematch. But with little likelihood of gaining a much-needed edge over Usman on the mat, Edwards may seek to even the odds by luring the champion into a street fight.

Prediction: Usman (-315); OVER 4.5 Rounds (-175)
