The two best heavyweight boxers on the planet are expected to face off sooner rather than later. Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder are expected to step inside the squared circle during the fall in a title unification match. Joshua is currently being listed as a -225 favorite with Wilder coming back at +175.
Wilder, the current WBC champion, has said he has agreed to take on Joshua – the current WBA, IBF and WBO champion – in the United Kingdom. Though the bout has not been officially announced – Wilder just said he took the bout on his Instagram account – the Sportsbook would be the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000.
Joshua is perhaps more naturally gifted than any heavyweight we have seen in some time. AJ has devastating power with 20 of his 21 career wins coming by knockout – with 16 opponents never seeing the fourth round. The former Olympic gold medalist really showcased his fundamentals in his most recent victory over Joseph Parker when he showed off his impressive jab and looked more defensively sound than in previous bouts.
Wilder is not going to be confused for a ring tactician but “The Bronze Bomber” is a perfect 40-0 – with 39 of the wins coming via knockout – thanks to the massive power in his hands. Wilder throws everything with violent intentions and is constantly on the hunt to finish the fight. That being said, he can be outboxed based on pure technique – see his most recent fight vs Luis Ortiz. However, Wilder is never out of a fight thanks to his power and grit.
This is legitimately one of the best matchups in all of boxing. One would think that Joshua’s movement and jab should be able to keep Wilder at bay for the bulk of the bout but Wilder can lay waste to any opponent within an instant. And we have also seen Joshua on the mat when he fought Wladimir Klitschko.
