Jays to Face Inexperienced Merritt in Game 5 of ALCS

The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to join an exclusive club, but they still have a long road to get there. The Jays staved off elimination with a 5-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS on Tuesday, and they’re three games away from joining the 2004 Boston Red Sox as the only teams in major league history to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series. Game 5 is Wednesday in Toronto.

Shark Bites
  • The Blue Jays are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
  • The Indians are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in October.
  • The Blue Jays are 4-17-1 OU in their last 22 games with a closing total of 8.0 or more.

Ryan Merritt and Marco Estrada will get the nod for the Tribe and Jays, respectively. Merritt (1-0, 1.64 ERA) will become the second pitcher in MLB history to start a playoff game after making just one regular season start in his career. Merritt began his tenure with three relief appearances over which he gave up one run and three hits in six frames.

Estrada (1-1, 1.65) tossed his first big league complete game at Cleveland in Game 1, but took the loss after allowing two runs and six hits in eight innings. The Mexican started Game 5 of last year’s ALCS and yielded only one run over 7 2/3 innings against Kansas City to keep Toronto from being eliminated.

All four games of the series have gone UNDER the total, as betting on low-scoring games is a very profitable idea for both teams at this point. The Indians have gone UNDER in six straight, while the Jays have cashed UNDER bets in six of their last seven home tilts.

Sportsbook Odds & Computer Pick

The visiting Cleveland Indians were 140 moneyline underdogs in this one earlier in the day at most online sportsbooks including Sportsbook. The total was 8 at Sportsbook for those preferring over under betting.
