Three things we know to be inevitable: Death, taxes and Clayton Kershaw owning the San Francisco Giants. Kershaw, who will get the start for the Los Angeles Dodgers when they take on the Giants on Sportsbook Day, has a 1.60 ERA and a 9.3 SO/9 across his 41 career appearances vs San Fran. Last season alone, the Giants could only muster six earned runs in 34.0 innings against the lefty.
What would have been the premier pitching matchup of Sportsbook Day was not to be after Madison Bumgarner injured his thumb during spring training. Instead of MadBum, the Giants will start Ty Blach, who has just 26 career starts in the majors. There were times last season when Blach looked like a legitimate starter – specifically the month of July – but he also struggled near the end of the year and found himself in the bullpen. In five appearances vs the Dodgers in 2017, Blach had a solid 3.20 ERA but had the same number of walks as strikeouts.
The Dodgers had little issue against the Giants in the second half of last season, going 7-2 SU while holding an anemic San Fran offense to just 2.7 runs per game. Of course, the Giants have done their best to add punch to their batting order during the offseason – acquiring Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria – but you need to wonder if that was enough to make arguably the worst offense in baseball last season credible.
