Blue Jays vs. Brewers Picks & Odds: Rowdy Ready To Face Former Teammates

The Milwaukee Brewers (40-32) open a three-game weekend series with the Toronto Blue Jays (39-30). This marks the first time Brewers first baseman, Rowdy Tellez, will face the team that drafted him nearly 10 years ago. Toronto, meanwhile, will look to their ace to right the ship. See below for a Blue Jays vs Brewers prediction as well as more insight and analysis.

Blue Jays vs Brewers Odds & Analysis

Sportsbook Odds

The Blue Jays opened as betting favorites at -151. But that isn’t necessarily good news as they are 1-4 SU in their last five games when favored. The total opened at 8.5. The OVER is 9-1 in Toronto’s last 10 contests and seems to be a no-brainer for any Jays game these days.

Starting Pitchers

Alek Manoah gets the start for the Blue Jays. He’s had an impressive first half of the season going 8-2 with an E.R.A. of 2.00. His most recent start was one of his two losses this season, albeit it was against the Yankees and he did not get any run support. This will be Manoah’s first career start vs the Brewers.

Milwaukee will give the ball to Adrian Houser, who has struggled this season with a 4-7 record and an E.R.A. of 4.24.  He has given up at least three earned runs in four of his last five starts. Like Manoah, this will be Houser’s first career start vs tonight’s opponent.

Jays Hope Manoah Can Help Recent Pitching Woes

Toronto is struggling of late having lost five of their last seven contests. Pitching has been a major issue during that stretch as they have given up just under eight runs per game on average. So the timing of Manoah’s start couldn’t come at a better time. He is currently tied for second in the majors with eight wins and 11 quality starts and has the fifth best E.R.A. in all of baseball. Anybody wanting to bet him to win the American League Cy young award can currently get him at +550 or + 600 depending what site you are on.

While they may be struggling to prevent runs, they certainly aren’t having any trouble producing them. They have scored 32 times in their last four games and you may be surprised to know that it’s their catcher, Alejandro Kirk leading the way. He is hitting .370 over the last month and leads all A.L. catchers in All-Star voting.

Tellez Hoping For A “Rowdy” Reunion

As mentioned, Rowdy Tellez will face the Toronto Blue Jays for the first time since being traded to Milwaukee just under a year ago. At 27 years old, the Brewers first baseman is finally getting the chance to be an everyday player and he is taking advantage of it. He is third on the team with 11 home runs and leads all Brewers with 41 RBI.

The Brewers though are more dependent on their pitching than they are their offense. Minus a stretch in which they went 2-11 earlier this month, Milwaukee has one of the best team E.R.A.’s in all of baseball and are second in the majors, behind only the Braves, with 671 strikeouts.

Blue Jays vs Brewers Pick Insights

Blue Jays: Keys to Victory

Keep the ball in the park. The Brewers are not a very good hitting team as they rely heavily on the home run. Manoah hasn’t given up a deep ball in four straight games and seven of his last eight. If he can continue that trend, then taking the road team seems like the smart play when making your Blue Jays vs Brewers pick.

Brewers: Keys To Victory

Make this a bullpen game. If the Brewers can keep it close and get into the middle to late innings with a chance to win, they will have a good shot of collecting their second straight “W”. Their bullpen is one of the best in baseball, featuring closer, Josh Hader, who is almost always automatic.
