In every baseball season, there’s a bit of chaos — teams we expect to win fall flat, and dark horses surge to division titles. Ahead of 2023, the MLB win totals are set, with the Dodgers and Braves leading the way with a projected 95.5 wins. The Nationals and A’s scoop the bottom of the barrel on the other end with a measly 59.5 projected wins.

MLB Win Total Odds: Last Year’s Surprises
Who exceeded expectations? And who failed miserably?
Baltimore Orioles: Cashed OVER 62.5 wins (-110)
No club in baseball shocked the world quite like the Orioles. The 2022 “Chaos Birds” soared past their 62.5 expected wins, collecting 83 victories and threatening the Rays for the final AL wild-card spot. Starting pitching let the O’s down last season, and it appears that rotation will set a cap on Baltimore’s success in 2023. Still, the Orioles have a dynamite young core, including Rookie of the Year favorite Gunnar Henderson, that could do some damage in 2023. I’d watch the O’s as a strong candidate for OVER 77.5 wins this year.
Chicago White Sox: Cashed UNDER 92.5 Wins (-115)
Yuck. The White Sox had a dreadful, injury-riddled season that ended with manager Tony La Russa taking a health-related leave of absence as the club finished 81-81. Nothing seemed to click for the ChiSox, who stumbled out of the gates with an 8-12 record in April and never quite recovered. Luis Robert missed time, as did Eloy Jimenez, while Yasmani Grandal and Lucas Giolito regressed in dramatic fashion.
It was a horror show in Chicago. But with the AL Central up for grabs again in 2023, I’d count on a bounce-back year from the South Siders. They should definitely cash the OVER 82.5 wins (-125).
2023 MLB Win Totals: Best Bets
Let’s exploit the market while we can.
Seattle Mariners: OVER 87.5 Wins (-125)
Thanks to the additions of Kolten Wong and Teoscar Hernandez, the Mariners have an improved batting order to parlay with their stellar rotation and bullpen. Perhaps Julio Rodriguez even blossoms from ROTY to AL MVP? Luis Castillo, Robbie Ray and Logan Gilbert will run the show on the mound, and from there, the magic will happen.
Not only do the M’s have a super high floor this season, I actually see them as dark-horse World Series candidates who can sneak into the playoffs behind the Astros in the AL West and go from there. The OVER 87.5 (-125) is a fine wager before Opening Day.
Tampa Bay Rays: UNDER 89 Wins (-115)
It’s a hard thing to win 90 games during a major-league season. While Tampa did it three of the last four full seasons (we can’t count the 2020 COVID year), I’m not sure the roster is capable of racking up as many Ws in 2023.
Tyler Glasnow, an AL Cy Young candidate, messed up his oblique and will miss time, while Shane Baz, another X factor starter, will miss the year after Tommy John surgery. Shane McClanahan is a bona fide ace, so the rotation isn’t completely decimated, but I’m not sure the crew has the legs for a 90-win season in a deeply competitive AL East. The Rays are steady, but with the Orioles on the rise, and clubs like the Blue Jays and Yankees fighting at the top, there are too many variables for me to back the Rays.
Take the UNDER at -115.
