MLB Win Total Odds 2021: Dodgers have highest mark to hit

Corey Seager (left) and Mookie Betts' (right) Dodgers have the highest win total in the MLB win total odds for 2021.

Following a bizarre 2020 MLB season, this year looks to be somewhat back to normal with a full 162-game schedule, and the MLB win total odds for 2021 have been released! Ahead of last year’s shortened campaign, the Los Angeles Dodgers had the highest listed win total at 38.5 victories. The same team tops the list again this season but the total is 103.5.

Online sportsbook BetOnline Sportsbook has listed the MLB win total odds for 2021 with the reigning World Series champion Dodgers having the highest win total at 103.5. At the other end of the spectrum, oddsmakers are projecting a rough campaign for the Pittsburgh Pirates with their win total set at a lowly 59.5.

Check out where your favorite team lands in the MLB win total odds for 2021.

MLB Win Total Odds for 2021: Why do the Dodgers have the highest total?

Well, it’s understandable that the team that just lifted the Commissioner’s Trophy in late October would be listed to have the most wins in baseball the following year, especially since the team had the highest win total last year as well.

Two years ago, the last time that Major League Baseball played a full 162-game season, these Dodgers racked up 106 victories. For the shortened 2020 campaign, Los Angeles exceeded its listed win total of 38.5 by notching 43 victories. Extrapolated over a full season, that’s 116 wins, well over the 103.5 mark set in MLB win total odds for 2021.

What’s new for the Dodgers in 2021?

The big splash for Los Angeles heading into the 2020 campaign was dealing for 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts. He finished second in NL MVP voting in his first year in Hollywood with a slash line of .292/.366/.562.

With the Dodgers’ batting lineup as dangerous as ever from 1 through 9, the team went out and landed Trevor Bauer, the top starting pitcher on the free-agent market, to bolster their rotation. The rich get richer – Bauer is coming off his first career Cy Young Award after posting a dazzling 1.73 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 11 starts with Cincinnati.

This team has a great balance of youth and experience, and candidates for both the NL MVP and the NL Cy Young Award. Playing in a not-so-great NL West, there’s no reason the Dodgers shouldn’t surpass 103.5 wins.

My picks in MLB win total odds for 2021

Win total bets are fun to play, especially if you’re backing your favorite team. If you’re an optimist, the OVER is an encouraging bet while if you’re a glass-half-empty type of thinker, then you may benefit from an UNDER play. Without further ado, here are my three favorite MLB win total odds.

Boston Red Sox: UNDER 80.5 (-115)

I’m starting with the third-worst team in the American League last year and the AL East basement-dwellers. After the Red Sox traded away Mookie Betts and David Price, the only direction to go was down and they had just 24 wins in 60 games. Over a full campaign, that translates to 65 wins. I don’t see 16 more victories in 2021.

It’s not all grim for Boston, though, as Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers are a dynamic duo on the left side of the diamond while Alex Verdugo, who came over in the Betts-Price trade, looks like a great player too. I just think New York, Toronto and Tampa Bay will be tough games for Boston and even Baltimore will be scrappier; getting to 81 wins is going to be hard.

Toronto Blue Jays: OVER 87.5 (-115)

On the flip side, the Toronto Blue Jays may be a team to watch in 2021. The Jays returned to the playoffs in 2020 after a three-year hiatus, collecting 32 wins (which would be 86 in a full season), and made some waves in the offseason to improve the club.

Toronto brought in 2017 World Series MVP George Springer to play center field and help solidify the top of the batting lineup. Add in the expected progression of young stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette and this team looks to win a pile of games. Furthermore, expect starting pitcher Nate Pearson to take a big step forward after what was a disappointing rookie campaign.

Miami Marlins OVER 72.5 (-115)

The team that entered the 2020 season as the butt of many jokes turned heads by making the postseason. It was a surprise to some, but others saw it coming with the maturation of high draft picks and prospects accumulated after the team was essentially gutted over the previous few years.

The Marlins don’t have a ton of names that will have you salivating to place a futures bet on them, but the lineup is well constructed and the pitching rotation is filled with dynamic young arms. Their oldest starter is 25 and all of them had ERAs under 4 last season. Though runs may be hard to come by, the starting pitching is solid and will keep them in enough games to win 73.
