LSU vs Georgia Picks & Odds: Bulldogs Strengthening Faves to Claim SEC Crown

The SEC conference title will be on the line Saturday when the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (12-0 SU, 6-6 ATS) take on the LSU Tigers (9-3, 7-5). The Bulldogs remained perfect with last weekend’s 37-14 rout of Georgia Tech that extended their win streak to 14 games. The Tigers are coming off a 38-23 road loss to Texas A&M that snapped a 5-0 SU run, but they still edged out Alabama in their bid to return to the SEC championship game for the first time since 2019 on the strength of their recent 32-31 win over the Crimson Tide.

LSU vs Georgia Sportsbook Odds

The Bulldogs have rocketed to 17.5-point favorites since Sportsbook as 16-point chalk, while the total has held steady since Sportsbook at 50.5. Saturday afternoon’s matchup marks the first meeting between these SEC rivals since the Tigers claimed a decisive 37-10 victory in the 2019 SEC championship game, lifting them to 4-1 SU in their past five clashes.

The Tigers have held Georgia to 16 or fewer points in each of their four recent wins and have gone 4-0-1 against the spread over that stretch. Despite the Bulldogs’ recent offensive woes in head-to-head play, the OVER has remained a steady bet, going 7-2 over their past nine matchups.

Can Tigers Rebound from Demoralizing Defeat?

The Tigers had nothing on the line in last weekend’s date with the Aggies, but their performance in a lopsided loss remains a big disappointment. Already assured a berth in the SEC title game, a win over Texas A&M could have positioned LSU for a possible College Football Playoff berth if the Tigers could rise to the occasion against Georgia. But with the loss to the Aggies, this team now finds itself in a desperate battle to remain in consideration for a New Year’s Day bowl game appearance.

The Tigers defense particularly struggled against the Aggies, allowing Texas A&M to score on each of its first three possessions. Things went from bad to worse as an anticipated rally after recess failed to materialize, with the LSU offense sputtering after knotting the score at 17-17 on their first possession of the second half.

It was a particularly rough day for quarterback Jayden Daniels, who failed to pass or run for a score for the second time in three outings. However, Daniels remains this team’s biggest threat on the ground after racking up 824 rushing yards and 11 scoring runs during the regular season.

Bulldogs Fielding Nation’s Leading Defense

A slow start proved to be no problem for the Bulldogs in last weekend’s clash with the state rival Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Bulldogs found themselves facing a first-quarter deficit for just the third time this season after Georgia Tech opened the scoring with a touchdown on its first drive. But it was all Georgia after that, as the Bulldogs rebounded to take a 10-7 lead into the half.

The Bulldogs defense took over after recess, limiting the Yellow Jackets to minus-2 total yards on their first five second-half possessions before allowing a garbage-time touchdown in the dying minutes. Georgia has now surrendered just 12 points per game over its past six outings and has allowed a nation-best 11.3 points per game this season.

Stetson Bennett connected on two scoring passes and has now tossed for multiple scores in five of six outings. However, accuracy remains a concern. The senior pivot completed just 55.2 percent of his pass attempts last week, marking the second time in five outings he has thrown for less than 60 percent. That could spell trouble against an LSU pass defense that has allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete just 53.4 percent of attempts and connect on just three total scoring passes over its past five outings.

LSU: Keys to Win

The Tigers’ inexplicable letdown against a struggling opponent in a game with so much on the line raises doubts about their ability to keep pace with the high-powered Bulldogs. This team must rediscover the sense of urgency that lifted them into CFP contention. That is particularly true of the defense, which struggled against the run during a pair of lengthy Texas A&M scoring drives after recess.

Georgia: Keys to Win

Already the best bet to claim the top spot in the CFP rankings, the Bulldogs must avoid the slow start that marked last weekend’s win over Georgia Tech. This team has built its epic win streak on stingy defense, which has allowed just one TD in first-quarter action this season. Improved accuracy from Stetson Bennett will also be key to the success of the attack against the stingy LSU pass defense.
