NHL Calder Trophy Odds: Matvei Michkov Early NHL Rookie Of The Year Favorite

The 2024-25 Calder Trophy odds are out and Philadelphia Flyers' prized prospect Matvei Michkov leads the early NHL Rookie of the Year betting odds at +450.

Macklin Celebrini, San Jose Sharks' first overall pick in 2024 is second on the Calder Trophy odds board at +500. Stars short King Logan Stankoven is in a close third with +550 odds. Here are your full 2024-25 Calder Trophy odds:

Let's focus on the three players at the top of the 2024-25 Calder Trophy odds board to see what separates them.

Matvei Michkov (Philadelphia Flyers)

The Russian fell to Philadelphia in the 2023 draft due to concerns over when he might play in North America. Flyers GM Danny Briere had no issues getting the budding start to this side of the Atlantic a year after drafting him seventh overall.

In only his 17-year-old season, Michkov scored a remarkable 20 points in 27 games at the KHL level. He followed that up this year as an 18-year-old with 41 points in 47 games. The youngster finished second in scoring for Sochi.

Michkov joins a Flyers side that still has quite a bit of talent to surround him with. Sean Couturier had a down year in 23-24 but the captain scored 58 in 74 over the two seasons prior (a 64-point pace). Then add one of Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett or Joel Farabee on the other wing and watch Michkov fly.

Macklin Celebrini (San Jose Sharks)

As the 2024 first-overall pick Celebrini has to be included at the top of the odds board. Even if the consensus is that he's not what you'd call a generational talent, Celebrini isn't too far off according to some GMs.

Here's what one NHL GM told Frank Seravalli when asked how good is Macklin Celebrini compared to Connor Bedard.

I know that Macklin is a center, but maybe San Jose will bring on those responsibilities slowly and let Celebrini play on a line with Logan Couture and Tyler Toffoli. Couts was a 67-point player two seasons ago, while Toffoli scored 33 goals and 55 points with New Jersey and Winnipeg in 23-24. 

Playing on the wing for a year could let Celebrini get a feel for the speed of the NHL game while putting up the points necessary to challenge for the Calder Trophy. 

Logan Stankoven (Dallas Stars)

I love what we saw from Stankoven at the start of his NHL career. After dominating the AHL with 57 points in 47 games he stepped into the "Chel" and started producing right away with five goals and eight points in his first six games. 

The 2021 second-round pick effectively had his sophomore slump through the rest of the season as he adapted to the grind of the NHL season. But having learned from that he'll step into a Dallas top-six in 24-25 that will put him in a position to succeed.

Rookies are hard to predict so you might be looking at a value pick instead of just backing the chalk because the sportsbooks say you should. Here's a value pick for the 2024-25 Calder Trophy.

Dustin Wolf (Calgary Flames)

I know, a goalie hasn't won the Calder Trophy since Steve Mason in 2009. Maybe 2019 seventh-rounder Dustin Wolf can be the next one. 

We're talking about a goalie who has incredible numbers at the AHL level. In 92 games for the Calgary Wranglers, he holds a 2.29GAA and 0.926SV%. His growth has been steady and follows some of the best shot-stoppers in the league.

There has only ever been four drafted goalies who have maintained a .92+ save percentage (across all leagues) from their draft year to their D+4 season while playing at least 20 games in each of those seasons:

With Jakob Markstrom going to New Jersey, the crease is Wolf's to take over in 24-25. A good year from Wolf as the starter puts him in the conversation.

It’s always great to look back on a list like this and see just how many of these players turned into absolute superstars – there’s a noticeable lack of Connor McDavid thanks to him only playing 45 games in his rookie year due to injury.
