Kaprizov Is Setting Himself Apart

Kirill Kaprizov, the betting favorite to win the Calder Trophy at +150 odds, was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 draft, going 135th overall. He had been playing in the KHL for the past six years before moving to North America.

Kaprizov is off to a hot start in Minnesota with nine points in his first 11 games. He finished third in KHL scoring last season, so he has a knack for getting points on the board. He’s not the biggest player on the ice at five-foot-nine, but he does make an impact both offensively and defensively. He also has laid out a few big hits this season, which only adds to his game.

Kaprizov’s game is very similar to that of veteran teammate Zach Parise. Both players are small and gritty forwards, and always seem to be in the right position in the offensive end. Kaprizov is slowly making a name for himself around the league and at 23 years old he has a bright future ahead of him.

Lafrenière Is An Elite Talent

The New York Rangers got a huge boost by winning the NHL lottery and earning the right to choose first overall in last year’s draft. They made no mistake with the consensus top pick in Alexis Lafrenière. He currently owns +700 odds to win the Calder Trophy.

Lafrenière is coming off a World Junior gold medal with Canada last year and a 112-point season with the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic. He is one of the best prospects to come out of junior hockey since Connor McDavid. Not only is he an elite playmaker and talented scorer but he’s an explosive player off the puck with a great hockey IQ.

Lafreniere is off to a slow start with just one goal in his first 11 games, but it did happen to be a game-winning overtime goal against the Buffalo Sabres. There is a reason the young Ranger is one of the top choices in the Calder Trophy odds, though, and he should be must-watch TV as the season moves along.
