Vasilevskiy Deserves To Be The Favorite

Vasilevskiy, the 2019 Vezina Trophy winner, added a Conn Smythe to his trophy case as the most valuable player in the 2020-21 Stanley Cup playoffs, but finished second in Vezina voting, just behind Marc-Andre Fleury.

The Russian could easily have won the award after posting a .925 save percentage and leading the league in wins.

Vasilevskiy also led the league in high-danger save percentage among goalies to play 25 or more games and was second in goals saved above expected.

The Lightning star is simply the best goalie in the league on what should be one of the best teams in the league, so his ranking in Vezina Trophy odds is warranted.

In fact, +350 odds might actually be pretty good value for him.

NHL Vezina Trophy Odds: Top Contenders

Robin Lehner (+1200)

The goalie who wins the Vezina almost always plays for one of the top teams in the league. Whether the goalie’s numbers are a reflection of the team in front of him or he is the reason for his team’s success, the fact remains that the Vezina winner almost never plays for a poor team.

Such was the case last season when then Vegas Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury took home the hardware after a great statistical season, helping his team to the most wins in the league and a tie for the most points.

This season, Vegas loses the juggernaut Avalanche from its division and adds the Oilers, Canucks, Flames and expansion Kraken to go along with the bottom-dwelling Kings, Sharks and Ducks.

The Knights have a great chance to finish at the top of the league standings once again, and Fleury is no longer in the fold. Robin Lehner takes over as the full-time starter after finishing 20th in save percentage and 10th in WAR among goalies to start 17 or more games.

Lehner was the best “backup” in the league last season and is a great bet at +1200.

Sergei Bobrovsky (+2000)

Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky has been both Jekyll and Hyde through his career, winning more Vezina trophies than Vasilevskiy, Fleury, Carey Price, Henrik Lundqvist and many other top goalies of this era.

But Bobrovsky’s down moments have been WAY down, often costing his team and throwing his bloated contract into question. Both of Bobrovsky’s seasons in Florida have been poor as the Russian vet posted save percentages of .900 and .906.

But the Panthers figure to be one of the league’s top teams this season and Bobrovsky is the unquestioned starter, for now. Twenty-year-old Spencer Knight, a recent first-round pick of the Panthers, could factor into the equation but Bobrovsky will be given every opportunity to live up to his contract. If he can be Jekyll instead of Hyde, +2000 could be an incredible value in NHL Vezina Trophy odds.

Best Bet: Juuse Saros (+2500)

Juuse Saros was simply one of the best goalies in the league last season. Finally handed the reins in Nashville, Saros blossomed, posting a .927 save percentage (third among goalies starting 25-plus games) and finishing fifth in goals saved above expected and fifth in WAR.

Saros’ 21-11-1 record was stellar on one of the more disappointing teams in the league during most of the regular season.

We could be on the verge of a breakout season from one of the league’s young new stars in goal. At +2500, the odds are very attractive. Saros was at +4000 during the preseason. Get in before that number skyrockets.
