Georgia Bulldogs vs Mississippi State Bulldogs Preview

Georgia Primed to Dominate All-Bulldogs Matchup

The Georgia Bulldogs have had to wait an extra week to halt one of the worst stretches the team has seen in several years – and you can bet they’ll be fired up for Saturday’s game against visiting Mississippi State. Georgia (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) has played three uninspiring games in a row as it prepares to host the SEC’s other Bulldogs (2-4 SU, 1-5 ATS), who have struggled all year.

Sportsbook Odds Analysis

Georgia kicked things off at -22.5, but you’ll now find that line at either -23.5 or -24 at the majority of sportsbooks. The total of 45.5 is holding steady for now, but should see movement as the week goes on.

Mississippi State News & Notes

A 24-17 win over Vanderbilt last time out did little to instill confidence in the 2020 edition of the Bulldogs – though it did halt an ugly four-game losing streak in which Mississippi State scored just 30 total points. The Mike Leach Air Raid offense that was expected to create fireworks at David Wade Stadium has instead fizzled, producing an average of 19.6 points per game.

The problems here have been twofold. The quarterback play has been positively dreadful, with K.J. Costello and Will Rogers combining to throw just eight touchdown passes on 324 attempts (while also tossing 14 interceptions). And while the run game isn’t a big part of the offense, it has generated a pitiful 129 yards on 100 attempts so far this season.

Georgia News & Notes

The Bulldogs have been outscored by a combined 22 points over their past three games, getting roasted by Alabama and Florida while pulling out an uninspiring win over Kentucky in between. Their most recent loss was particularly demoralizing, as they burst out to a 14-0 advantage before watching the Gators score 38 of the next 45 points to turn the game around.

The Bulldogs will undoubtedly hope that their defense holds so they won’t need to rely on a passing game that has looked terrible so far. Stetson Bennett and D’Wan Mathis have combined to complete just 52.4 percent of their passes with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. The running game (led by Zamir White) is averaging a respectable 4.4 yards per attempt in 2020.

Betting Pick: Georgia -22.5 (-110)

Nothing about the Mississippi State offense suggests that the visiting Bulldogs will be able to keep the ball out of Georgia’s hands. Look for the hosts to pound a formidable Mississippi State run defense into dust en route to a convincing win.
