All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey can be an impactful player but since he arrived with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, the Jags have been a letdown from a betting perspective.
The Jaguars have played 51 games since they selected Ramsey fifth overall in the 2016 draft and they’ve only won 37 percent of their games in that span.
Now that he’s expected to be traded, with the Kansas City Chiefs emerging as his likely destination, let’s break down the Jags’ recent betting records with Ramsey in the lineup:
Bettors Seeing Negative Impact for Jaguars With Ramsey
Although I think Jalen Ramsey is very talented with his defensive ability in the secondary, the records don’t back up the notion that he has positively impacted the Jaguars from a betting perspective.
In 2015, prior to Ramsey’s arrival, the Jaguars were one of the worst teams in the league with a terrible defense. They ranked 31st in points allowed per game (28.1), ranked 29th in passing yards allowed per game and finished the season 5-11 SU and 7-9 ATS with 10 of their 16 games going OVER.
Then in 2016, with Ramsey in the lineup, the Jaguars finished the season 3-13 SU and 8-8 ATS. They were underdogs in 14 of those games and finished 3-11 SU and 7-7 ATS in those outings while still allowing 25 points per game.
In Ramsey’s tenure with Jacksonville, the Jaguars have been an underdog 31 times and in those games, they are 9-22 SU, 16-13-2 ATS and 14-17 O/U.
Nothing about these records screams big profit as there’s no clear edge, other than fading the Jags on the moneyline, which only yielded minimal returns (+$220).
See below for the Jaguars’ full betting record from 2016 to 2019:
Betting Record | SU Record | ATS Record | OU Record |
---|---|---|---|
Jaguars | 19-32 (37.2%) | 24-26-1 (47.0%) | 25-26 (50.0%) |
The only reason those records aren’t worse is that in 2017, the Jaguars finished 10-6 SU and 9-7 ATS while only allowing 16 points per game. They eventually fell in the AFC championship game to the New England Patriots and the hype train went off the rails.
In the short term, it’s worth noting that the Jaguars are also 0-3 SU and 0-3 ATS in three Thursday Night Football games with Ramsey in the lineup. They’re currently 2-point home underdogs to the Titans for Week 3’s TNF contest.
It’s records like this that reinforce Ramsey’s negative impact from a betting perspective for the Jaguars.
