When the New Orleans Saints jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night, it looked as though the Raiders were in for a long night.
But unlike Raiders teams of the past that might have folded after the slow start, this year’s squad fought back and outscored New Orleans 34-14 the rest of the way, securing an impressive win in their first home game in Las Vegas.
Derek Carr went 28-for-38 for 282 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as he outdueled veteran Drew Brees. Las Vegas has now scored 34 points in back-to-back games. With an elite running back in Josh Jacobs and an elite tight end in Darren Waller, this Raiders offense looks like the real deal.
New England News & Notes
Cam Newton’s career in New England is off to an excellent start. The former NFL MVP has rushed for two touchdowns in each of his first two games with the Patriots and he showed off his arm in last week’s 35-30 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with 397 passing yards. If not for an uncharacteristicly poor day from the defense, New England should be 2-0, and only lost on Sunday due to a goal-line stand.
Any questions about whether Newton and Bill Belichick would sync together on offense have already been answered. If the Patriots are able to return to form on defense, after finishing 2019 with the best total defense and scoring defense in the NFL, they should be right back in contention for the top spot in the AFC again this season.
Betting Pick: OVER 47.5 points
Both teams are coming off high-scoring affairs and both should be gearing up for another one. New England isn’t likely to get torched for five touchdowns at home again, but the Raiders should put up enough points to hang around late into this game and send it OVER the posted total.
