Chiefs Shock and Awe in Week 1, Open Week 2 as Sizable Faves

Coming off a monumental victory and upset over the New England Patriots as 8-point underdogs, the Kansas City Chiefs could be for real. They’ll host Andy Reid’s old team this Sunday when the Eagles come to town looking to build off a 1-0 start of their own.

SHARK BITES
  • The Eagles are 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games on the road.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of the Chiefs’ last 8 games as home favorites.
  • The Eagles are 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as road underdogs.

The Chiefs, 4-1 straight up in their last five games against the NFC, will be installed as the betting favorite this weekend with their quarterback Alex Smith coming off a career day – maybe a little competition is exactly what he needed. The former first overall pick had drawn criticism the last few seasons for his apprehension to throw the ball down the field but after a 28-for-35 Sportsbook-night performance in which he threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns against the defending Super Bowl champs, that noise seems to have quieted.

He and the Chiefs will face a much better pass defense in Week 2, though, and they probably won’t be putting up another 40 spot.

The Eagles had the second-best pass defense last year, according to the Football Outsiders, and after limiting Kirk Cousins and the stacked aerial attack of the Redskins to just 200 yards, you can expect them to be good again in 2017.

One of the biggest factors for the Eagles this season in whether they’ll challenge for a playoff spot is the play of quarterback Carson Wentz and if he performs like he did in Week 1, Philly is bound for the postseason. He threw for over 300 yards against the Washington professional football team after tailing off big time at the end of last season and faces a huge test when he takes on the ball-hawking Kansas City defense.

While losing a player like Eric Berry is never good, the Chiefs looked just fine after he was carted off the field in the opener and they should be able to keep Wentz somewhat under wraps after making the best quarterback in the NFL look mediocre.

Andy Reid, who was the head coach of the Eagles from 1999 to 2013, has played his former team just once since leaving for K.C. and he came away with a 10-point victory against Philly in the third of what would go on to be a nine-game winning streak. Reid put on a coaching clinic in Week 1 against the Patriots and I, for one, cannot wait to see what he has up his sleeves for this Sunday’s matchup.
