USFL Championship Picks: Don’t Expect A Ton Of Points

It all comes down to this.

After an exciting year in the USFL’s reboot season, we have reached the championship game as the 9-1 Birmingham Stallions take on the 6-4 Philadelphia Stars.

This is the fourth championship game in USFL history after the first three took place back in 1983, ’84 and ’85. The Stars franchise actually played in all three of those games, winning it all in 1984.

The Stars now enter the 2022 version of the USFL’s big game as 4.5-point underdogs.

UNDER 45 points

The Stallions’ strategy of running the ball and playing good defense worked for them all season and led them to a tie for the best record in the league at 9-1. They averaged 135.7 rushing yards per game (second in the league) and are likely to rely on the ground game once again. Former Alabama standout running back Bo Scarbrough was a great midseason addition for the Stallions, and we anticipate them handing the ball to the big man early and often in this game.

The Stallions don’t have a prolific passing attack and even needed a pick-six and a kick return touchdown for their playoff game last week to get over the 44.5-point total.

The Stallions also did not allow more than 20 points in any of their last five games.

On the other side, Philadelphia QB Case Cookus has certainly been dynamic through the air and on the ground at times this year, but overall the Stars had a bottom-three passing attack and bottom-four rushing attack. It was Philly’s defense (first in the league with 13 interceptions) that led the team to this point.

This game has low score written all over it, and we are very comfortable taking the UNDER here knowing the public’s penchant for betting the OVER in championship games. This line is probably a couple points too high.

Philadelphia Stars +4.5

Because we’re thinking the game will be low-scoring, there’s a good chance it’s also pretty close. While we like the Stallions to ultimately find a way to win, at -195 odds we don’t love the value.

Instead, we like the Stars to cover the 4.5 points at -110. Cookus is the better QB in this game after earning the third-highest PFF grade (66.6) among USFL quarterbacks with more than 100 dropbacks. He was also second in the league with 12 touchdown passes.

We like Cookus to do enough through the air and on the ground to keep things close enough to cover the spread.

How To Bet On USFL Betting Odds:

While you can bet on spreads and point totals, one of the easiest ways to bet on USFL betting odds is through a moneyline. This moneyline bet means you simply pick which side you think will win between the favorite (signaled with a minus sign) and underdog (with a plus).

A USFL moneyline of +200 means that you would win $200 on a successful $100 wager. That’s also equivalent to fractional odds of 2/1, decimal odds of 3.00 and implied odds of 33.33 percent. A negative moneyline of -200 means that you would have to wager $200 in order to win $100 on the favorite.
