2012 Indy 500 Odds: Briscoe Favored

Get the milk on ice at the Brickyard. Indy car racing returns to Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend for the 96^th Indianapolis 500. The pole sitter for this year's Indy 500 is Ryan Briscoe which also makes him the race favorite at Sportsbook at 15/4. In Indy 500 history the pole sitter has ended up winning the race only 18 times, the last being Helio Castroneves in 2009.

This will be Briscoe's seventh run in the Indy 500 and his best previous finish came in 2007 when he finished fifth.

Sadly this season the defending Indy 500 Sportsbook won't be returning to the Brickyard. J.R. Hildebrand looked like he had last year's Indy 500 in the bag before running into the wall on the final turn on the final lap. That crash allowed Dan Wheldon to speed past Hildebrand and cross the finish line first.

Hildebrand would end up finish second after skidding over the finish line. Wheldon's second Indy 500 win would be his last career win as he was tragically killed in a crash at Las Vegas later in the season.

Hildebrand will be back at the Brickyard to try and finish that final turn this time, but the oddsmakers at Sportsbook don't expect him to lead the pack again. Hildebrand will start in the sixth row and is a 35/1 underdog at Sportsbook.

There are three former Indy 500 Sportsbooks in the field this year, including the aforementioned Helio Castroneves. He has won the Indy 500 three times, in 2001, 2002 and 2009 and follows Briscoe on the Sportsbook F1 odds list at 11/2.

The other former Sportsbooks in this year's starting grid include Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti. Dixon, who won in 2008 is listed at 10/1 at Sportsbook while Franchitti, the 2007 and 2010 Indy Sportsbook is a 9/1 underdog.

One driver bettors may want to put at least a few bucks on this weekend is Will Power. He's never won the Indianapolis 500 before, but this may finally be his year. Power's best career finish at the Brickyard was fifth place in 2009, but he's the hottest driver on the Indy Car circuit right now.

Power has won the latest three races on the Indy Car schedule with victories in Sao Paulo, Long Beach and Birmingham, Alabama. Right now at Sportsbook Power is listed at 6/1 on the Indianapolis 500 odds.
