Matthew Wolff is one of the picks in the PGA Championship matchup odds

PGA Championship Matchup Odds: Take Wolff Over DeChambeau

The 2022 PGA Championship is set to get underway on Thursday at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In what is the most competitive field of the PGA Tour season, 156 players will attempt to raise the Wanamaker Trophy.Southern Hills will play to a par 70 and has the capabilities to measure close to 7,550 yards. This will allow strong drivers of the golf ball to thrive despite the connotation that it is a second-shot golf course.

Patrick Cantlay (-127) Over Cameron Smith

Odds as of May 17 at

These are two of the favorites to win the 2022 PGA Championship but Cantlay inherently possesses a higher floor. I want to target steadiness when it comes to head-to-head matchups and that is the name of Cantlay’s game.

The reigning Player of the Year has played in 10 events this season and six of those outings have resulted in top-10 finishes. Among those starts, Cantlay has not only captured a victory at the Zurich Classic alongside Xander Schauffele but also lost in playoffs at the WM Phoenix Open and the RBC Heritage.

Smith is a much more volatile option – despite winning twice this year alone, he has also missed two cuts in his last seven starts. I believe his Players Championship victory was a bit lucky given the weather players experienced and he may struggle with the difficult conditions of Southern Hills.

Cameron Young (-139) Over Abraham Ancer

Odds as of May 17 at

The short game is going to be very key this week at Southern Hills and Abraham Ancer is one of the worst in that category. The Mexican ranks outside the top 200 on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green and that should spell trouble for him.

Southern Hills also is not a fantastic fit for him as he tends to play his best golf on short positional courses. Young has proven to play well on any style of course at any time. The favorite in the Rookie of the Year race, he already has four top-three finishes to his name.

The most recent came in his last outing at the Wells Fargo Championship but he has also played extremely well at longer venues. He is a force to be reckoned with and he may introduce himself to all golf fans this week at the 2022 PGA Championship.

Dustin Johnson (+112) Over Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland-134

Odds as of May 17 at

I may be on an island but I see major disrespect in the markets this week toward Dustin Johnson. His play has not been as poor as the media had made it out to be as he contended at the Farmers Insurance Open, played well at the Players Championship and made the semifinals in the match play event.

He is a stalwart in major championships, especially the PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Southern Hills has played host to both of those events and Johnson’s skill set should relish the opportunity at hand this week. He is crafty around the green, which cannot be said of Hovland.

The Norwegian ranks dead last on the PGA Tour in SG: Around-the-Green. That simply will not get the job done and makes me believe he could have a short week in Tulsa.

Hideki Matsuyama (-110) Over Xander Schauffele

Hideki Matsuyama-110
Xander Schauffele-110

Odds as of May 17 at

This matchup proves what can change with one strong tournament. Schauffele finished fast at the AT&T Byron Nelson after nearly missing the cut at TPC Craig Ranch.

He has played poorly in 2022 and despite his victory with Cantlay at the Zurich Classic, his game is still not where it needs to be statistically.

His ball-striking numbers have taken a dip, which is not the case for Matsuyama. The man from Japan is a two-time Sportsbook this season and after recovering from a neck injury, his form has returned.

He could have easily won last week and regularly contends in major championships, making him our selection in this matchup.

Scottie Scheffler (-105) Over Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm-115

Odds as of May 17 at

It does not get much easier than betting on the best player in the world at these odds. To make matters more attractive, Southern Hills is Scheffler’s favorite course. He possesses all the tools in the tool kit and has a considerable statistical edge over Rahm.

Yes, the Spaniard is a top-notch player himself but he has a glaring weakness in his game. Rahm’s short game is poor and does not touch that of Scheffler’s.

Their ball-striking numbers are similar with Rahm even holding the slight edge but his chipping and putting is a liability and will be the difference in the 2022 PGA Championship.

Matthew Wolff (+117) Over Bryson DeChambeau

Matthew Wolff vs Bryson deChambeau
GolferOdds
Matthew Wolff+117
Bryson DeChambeau-140

Odds as of May 17 at

There is a pretty good chance DeChambeau does not even play given he is recovering from wrist surgery but that is not baked into this line. A healthy DeChambeau is miles better than Wolff but the 2020 U.S. Open champion has barely touched a club since missing the cut at the Masters.

Wolff has at least flashed some form as he captured a top-25 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship. He is also familiar with the property, having gone to school an hour away at Oklahoma State.

This bet may void before players tee off but if it doesn’t, Wolff will be able to take care of a less than 100 percent DeChambeau at the 2022 PGA Championship.
