Why Would the Falcons Trade Julio Jones?

His age and contract would likely be the main factors in why the Atlanta Falcons would trade Julio Jones, and while they would be letting go of arguably the greatest wide receiver of his generation, teams in the NFL are always building for the future.

Jones is entering his 11th season and missed seven games last year with a variety of injuries. In fact, while he played 14 or more games from 2014 to 2019, it was not uncommon for Julio to routinely be on the injury report with random ailments. At 32 years old, he might as well be 42 in NFL years given the number of hits and the wear and tear his body has endured as the No. 1 receiving option for the Falcons.

Then there’s his contract for the next two seasons, which has a combined $42-million cap hit for Atlanta and has strapped the Falcons in potential roster maneuvers. The Dirty Birds dug themselves a hole and pretty much have to trade him to get out of salary cap hell and potentially get some draft capital in return. Of course, it helps that they already have Calvin Ridley and newly drafted Kyle Pitts ready to take the receiver reins in Atlanta.

What NFL Team to Consider in Julio Jones Next Team Odds

Naturally, everyone considering his next destination in the NFL wants to think the New England Patriots and Julio Jones would be a perfect marriage but based on the asking price from Atlanta, it seems far-fetched the Pats would give up that kind of return.

The Falcons are reportedly asking for a first-round pick in return for Jones, which seems laughable for a 32-year-old and banged-up yet uber-talented wide receiver. However, certain teams may view Jones as the final piece for a Super Bowl run. That team likely won’t be the Patriots because taking on Jones’ cap hit and giving up a first-rounder is not close to the “Belichick way.”

That’s why the long-shot team for bettors to consider is the Green Bay Packers at +1000. The Packers are kind of in disarray right now with the ongoing Aaron Rodgers drama and their window to win the Super Bowl is getting smaller by the year. Rodgers’ issues with the franchise could be curbed if Green Bay were to add a player of Jones’ caliber to the offense. Opposing defenses typically load up to stop Davante Adams and if Rodgers had Adams and Jones on either side, it’s pretty difficult to envision how a secondary would stop that type of arsenal.

The Pack have made the NFC championship game the last two seasons and could view adding Jones as a means to increase their chances of winning the Super Bowl. They could also view it as an avenue to patch things up with Rodgers and appease him by adding more weaponry.
