Super Bowl Coin Toss Winners & Props

It’s the simplest of the hundreds of Super Bowl prop bets available at sportsbooks around the world, but it’s also the most popular for bettors. Wagering on the Super Bowl coin toss, a 50/50 proposition, is practically an American tradition, and hundreds of thousands of dollars are bet on this simple event each season.

Each of the past four Super Bowl coin tosses has come up tails, with the NFC team winning 18 of the last 20 flips heading into Super Bowl 52. The team that has won the coin toss has lost the past three Super Bowls.

Overall, the coin toss has almost lived up to its reputation as a 50/50 proposition, with heads landing 24 times and tails landing 27 times in the 51 Super Bowls. Teams winning the toss have gone on to win 24 of the 51 Super Bowls, with heads and tails each turning up an even 12 times during those wins.

While the coin toss can have a serious impact on a game, determining which team receives the ball on the opening kickoff in each half, it hasn’t always been kind to teams that have made multiple Super Bowl appearances.

The New England Patriots have made nine Super Bowl appearances, losing the toss in each of their five victories, in Super Bowls 36, 38, 39, 49 and 51. They got blown out by the Green Bay Packers as a coin toss winner in Super Bowl 31 and were upset by the New York Giants after winning the toss in Super Bowl 46.

The Philadelphia Eagles have only made two Super Bowl appearances (Super Bowls 15 and 39) and despite winning the coin toss on both occasions, Philly would go on to lose both games.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have also defied the coin toss in their six Super Bowl victories, winning the toss just once with tails in their 16-6 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl 9. Indeed, opponents winning the toss with heads are just 1-4 against the Steelers on Super Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers fans put a lot of stock in the Super Bowl coin toss. The Niners are a perfect 4-0 in Super Bowls when they have won the toss, which has come up tails in three of their four championship victories. The Dallas Cowboys have won the toss in six of their eight trips to the Super Bowl, although it wasn’t until their fourth Super Bowl appearance that Dallas went on to victory after winning the toss.
